Telcordia Signs Agreement with Unisys to Sell OSMOS, LocateIt System's Object-Relational Database (The NEWStand)

Unisys Corporation and Telcordia announced today that they have signed an OEM agreement that allows Telcordia to sell the Unisys object-relational database, OSMOS, independently or packaged with COMMON LANGUAGE Address Analysis System (LocateIt System) software.

Previously, customers had been able to use LocateIt System software by dialing into Telcordia. Now customers can purchase OSMOS from Telcordia and deploy the application locally.

LocateIt System software and the OSMOS database solve a variety of business problems that require accurate geographic data analysis, such as communications switch box location, shipping address verification, sales lead identification, map drawing, tax jurisdiction identification, and determination of pricing for distance-based services.

Client Server Access to LocateIt System Is a Big Success for BellSouth Business Systems (The Lexicon)

Client server technology is now being used to bring the production system service to work sites a half a continent away. BellSouth Business Systems (BBS) and Telcordia have successfully implemented a production-level remote procedure call (RPC) interface for Telcordia LocateIt System.

Today there are nearly 1,000 people at BBS using this virtual deployment of the LocateIt System. Hugh Bowie, BBS Project Manager told Telcordia LocateIt System Team, "You have exceeded our expectations. We could not have asked for anything more!"

LocateIt at a Glance(Unisys World)

Telcordia LocateIt system is a geographic reference information system built using C++ and an embedded Unisys object database system.

LocateIt is a nationwide, industry reference, Geographic Information System (GIS) that provides precise geographic information for addresses, intersections and geopolitical boundaries.

It overlays the United States Government mapping system database (TIGER -- Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) with geopolitical information (state, county) to produce comprehensive and precise data that is otherwise more difficult to obtain.

The system has analysis and search algorithms that accept incomplete address information as input and still produce results. A by-product of the analysis is the ability to produce the results in a customer-specified format, aiding the standardization of address information across the enterprise.

Among LocateIt's key abilities are:

  • preventing incorrect address data from being entered into corporate databases, an action that is expensive to correct;
  • determining tax jurisdiction for locations throughout the nation;
  • verifying and correcting customer addresses for bulk mailings, billing and routing of deliveries and maintenance personnel;
  • identifying potential sales prospects located a specified number of miles from a branch office;and
  • determining air-mile distance between two points as a foundation for setting and verifying billing rates for distance-based services.

LocateIt is available as an interactive dial-in service, with both an end-user and application programming interface supported, as a batch reconciliation facility, or as a turnkey information system.
